Who thought a book about tuberculosis could be this thrilling? John Green made a subject I assumed would be dry into something urgent, heartbreaking, and impossible to put down. Everything Is Tuberculosis blends sharp historical context with humane storytelling in a way that actually made me care about policy, medicine, and people I’d never met.
This one landed especially close to home — I have a distant relative who died of TB as a teen long before I was born, and the fact that a treatable disease became lethal because of poverty stuck with my family. Reading Green’s compassionate, clear-eyed account made that memory feel seen rather than sensationalized.
Green balances big-picture history with everyday human moments; the prose is readable, the research is solid, and the book leaves you both angry at injustice and hopeful about what informed action could change. For anyone interested in medical history, global health, or nonfiction that actually moves you, this is a must-read. Highly recommend. 📚

Great review, Linda! I have seen nothing but praise for this book which I find very surprising given the subject matter. I’ll definitely be reading this at some point.

I felt the exact same way before picking up this book! I almost only picked it up because I was so curious how such a book could have this kind of rating given the subject. 😆
