Despite so many knowing of this short story and author, I heard of it only minutes before starting it which (for better or worse) may have swayed my feelings slightly.
This was outlandish, strange, gruesome and inherently fascinating. Although published in the 60s, reading this from a modern perspective where AI is advancing more and more, draws on a strange and scary familiarity. The characters in this were brilliantly written despite the story only being 20 pages and it leaves so much to be desired. Really intrigued for discussion on this one and the misogyny in some of the passages.

Severance is a literary fiction dystopian full of consumerism, humanity and our will to survive.
This book was amazing, a read that is quiet, slow yet Severance is a literary fiction dystopian full of consumerism, humanity and our will to survive.
This book was amazing, a read that is quiet, slow yet equally metaphorical and unique. I absolutely loved this and the subtle commentary that weaved its way through the characters and their pandemic. Being aware of this books publication in 2018 and the similarities it had to covid, begged for a very strange and insightful reading experience. The pandemic and fever of Severance was so unique and I absolutely ADORED how it reflected not only society's fixation and habits of consumerism but the protagonist and her personal opinion on the fevered.. despite reflecting some of their characteristics.
Alongside this, the writing style and imagery was incredible. The perfect mix of an apocalyptic read that followed standard motifs with its own special and specific notions of what an apocalypse is. The characterisation and exploration of humanity, survival and its comparisons to everyday, modern consumerist life was fascinating.
Unfortunately there were moments that I felt a little bored but I'm completely placing it down to my own personal (too high) expectations. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this!...more
the memory police is a dystopian novel reflecting upon the importance of memory, humanity and connection. disam I obsessed with this book? absolutely
the memory police is a dystopian novel reflecting upon the importance of memory, humanity and connection. discussing the cost of losing vital parts of our being in comparison to losing passions that we are expected to survive without, every page of this book brought a new insight, conversation and fragility to the characters. with the most beautiful, fast paced writing too, I could NOT put this book down and it consumed every part of me until the very last page.
this is one I'll be revisiting again, knowing I'll get even more out of it with every read!...more
