The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore

This was full of things I didn't know about bookstores, from the very beginning in Colonial America (think Benjamin Franklin) to the days of the big box stores (think B&N and Borders) to Amazon and e-readers, finishing up with Parnassus Books in Nashville and the re-emergence of local Indies. I was once a bookseller (never an owner) and I know that whether it was a small local store, a used book store or Barnes & Noble, the love of books was what drove me. Putting a book into the hands of a reader was a joy. This book is well written and personal, not a dry history. At times I felt a lump in my throat. A good read for anyone who loves books.

Those who haven't worked in bookstores have certainly shopped in them, and we all have our favorites.
Antoinette, it just increased my desire to rent a van and cross the country going to bookstores and filling the van with books. Of course, it's a daydream, but a nice one. Maybe if I win the lottery.........
What a great daydream, Diane! Did you ever read Parnassus on Wheels? Only difference you would be buying not selling!
I love Parnassus on Wheels. That's probably what started my day dream. He has a whole chapter on that book.
"Putting a book in the hands of a reader was a joy"...........I love that quote of yours Diane, and it can only be said be a book lover (junkie), nice write up!!!
Well, you just sold me this book now, Diane! :D P.S. I'll split the cost of the van rental with you! :) :)
Diane wrote: "Candi, we'll need to lay in a stock of Bourbon Cream for the journey."Naturally!! I know a place that has the jumbo sized bottles! :D
Wonderful review, Diane. I, also, got emotional reading about Oscar Wilde and Drum & Spear. Friss really captured how a bookshop can serve as the hub of a community. I also loved the hopeful last chapter. Life is good when books are in it.
I wonder how many of us GR-types once worked in bookstores? I did time in a Waldenbooks at the tender age of 18.
