Read 2 times. Last read April 7, 2023.
Do yourself a favor and read this.
The second half of this book blew my mind. Very bleak but it will haunt me forever.
Best book of 2022: https://youtu.be/lQBAza0zdj8
Update: Reread it in French (no idea how to add another edition here) and liked it even more.

Honestly I think this is one of the best books I've ever read, not just one of the best of the year.

I have never heard of it until now and have added it to my tbr. I wonder if you would like Boy Parts by Eliza Clark.

I've seen it going around. I think my library has it so I'll check it out!

I just finished that book that I've read on your recommendation, and I'm just speechless. I've also reread the very beginning which makes much more sense once you know the whole story. I'm just deeply moved and impressed by how rich Harpman's themes are through such a unique and deeply disturbing plot. One of the most thought-provoking novels I've ever read, period.

I'm planning on mentioning it as often as possible so everyone picks it up, it's too underrated!
Just finished this book as my first book of 2023 and it was bleak but a reminder of how women can be strong. Brilliant!!
Irena wrote: "the book is great but I just hate the open ending I really like when author tells me everything :D"I agree there. What happens to them? Do they die?
This book!! I wish it had been my first book of 2023! It was phenomenal. I’m so grateful you found it and brought it to our attention. This story verges on perfection despite its sadness. I just put chased it so it can have a permanent place on my shelves! Thank you, thank you!!
I couldn't have picked a better time in my life to read this. I can relate to the protagonist so much. I'm so glad you wouldn't stop recommending it. More people should read it.
Currently reading and it makes me think of another book, you might like: Two Old Women: An Alaskan Legend of Betrayal, Courage and Survival by Velma Wallis
I’m all for reading and throughout the whole book I was WAITING for something to happen. And then it ended. Well written but SO dumb.
Thank you for the recommendation. I absolutely agree with you that this one will stay with the reader forever.
This book is a masterpiece I loved it so much.I wish I spoke French so I could read it in the original language.

So glad I did! It clarified the narrator's point of view and actually shifted my perspective of the story. This is a fascinating book! I'm so glad I came across it.
Please explain to me why this would haunt you? It’s a fantasy and completely unrealistic. I couldn’t be drawn in by how unfathomable the entire thing is
There's more than a story here , yes it's disturbing at times , but the courage of the young girl , her constant ability to keep hoping for something better was something that cannot be explained , but in a way experienced by humans even when it's not understood ,why?Especially when her life was a blank page to be filled with the limited experiences around her .
Where did she find the hope? The courage to never stop believing for something better?
I purchased a copy of this book because of you, and I thank you. It was as good as you promised (if not better) and I will definitely be rereading it, perhaps multiple times.
I read this book because of your review and it’s wonderful. I normally don’t read much fiction but this was such an easy and engaging read. There were passages that made me cry and I really don’t think that has ever happened before. It made me really think about exactly what it is that makes us human. How much can be stripped away before we become something else. Thank you so much.
I read this because of you and I loved it but also damn, the bleakest thing I've probably ever read!
I read this because of your review and struggle to understand what exactly blew your mind? I was waiting for the whole of the second half of my reading to have my mind blown, did I miss something? Or are you using too strong of an expression?
I really didn’t get it. It started well but I found it so boring and repetitive in the second part. What did I miss? Nothing happens, no deep characters, no answers, actually you already know there’s not gonna be a surprising ending, that made it so difficult to read! It took me 4 days to read the last 20 pages 🤦🏻♀️
This book left me as troubled as The Road did, and both are unforgettable. It is the kind of book that you recommend but you don’t necessarily “like”.
Just finished this book from your recommendation. Im flummoxed! It was brilliant and I'm just as lost at the end as I was at the start. I'm so glad you recommended it!
A divisive book - not so much in like or dislike, but more in the amount that readers liked it. Nothing blew my mind either, I liked it, but not to any great extent. A very meditative book without a developing plot, and without revelatory reasons for the scenario portrayed (some clues and suggestions, but not much else). I do think that if it was shorter, novella length, it might have had more impact, but overall, I felt like there wasn't a great deal of emotional resonance. The characterisation was as bleak as the setting.
