read it during my flight home, it was very fun and i loved the writing. i know the jumping around bothered people but honestly idgaf it was good either way to me! i relate to the main character at certain parts. its very interesting how even with different backgrounds, poc can relate to each other. there’s a part where the main character jumps out the car (for reasons) and she’s like “nooo my beautiful face” very real tbh ...more

to me, this is not a thriller. there are no twists, there are no turns, there are no edge of the seat moments. to me this is a literary novel about twto me, this is not a thriller. there are no twists, there are no turns, there are no edge of the seat moments. to me this is a literary novel about two sisters. one who is beautiful and loved by everyone and the other that is left in the shadows. Korede is always left to clean up her sisters mess while Ayoola lives freely and also has a habit of killing men. Korede and Ayoola wants the same man but of course Ayoola is the one who wins him and Korede is left to fear for his life… literally.
i loved this book so much, i loved that Korede is always trying to warn people about her sister yet protect her at the same time. how people never believed her and thought of her as jealous. Ayoola taking advantage of how far her sister will go for her but her pretty privilege as well. i wish this book had been marketed better but i enjoyed it regardless. ...more
i thought because this followed four women in the same apartment building i would find out extremely interesting but honestly sometimes i forgot that i thought because this followed four women in the same apartment building i would find out extremely interesting but honestly sometimes i forgot that they did. this book follows the social norms and expectations following women in korea. at times the book was funny and weird, the women were unhinged which i loved but unfortunately i just didn’t find any of the characters or their lives interesting. ...more
i accidentally spoiled myself for the book 70% through but even knowing the ending i still really enjoyed the book. the way it was written, their chili accidentally spoiled myself for the book 70% through but even knowing the ending i still really enjoyed the book. the way it was written, their childhood, the academia and tommy!! (i know andrew garfield plays tommy in the movie so i pictured him as tommy the entire book) this was a really good experience especially via audiobook and i’m glad i read it!
i know a lot of people think this book is boring but i found the boarding school interesting and i liked hearing kathy’s long ass random stories. i like how information is withheld and that you spend the entire novel waiting to figure out what happened. now i think that the plot twist is meh, it’s fine. but i think the book is more so about the relationships she has with these other characters with the plot twist added.
MINOR SPOILERS HERE i like that it wasn’t action heavy in the end and it is a little sad (or a lot actually) because these kids were raised to be a certain way and to basically be sheep, this book isn’t like other dystopian novels because they aren’t fighting the big bad and bringing down the system and to me that’s very realistic. that’s also something that hasn’t been done before and that’s what sets this apart from the other dystopian novels. i read that when asked why the kids didn’t just run away the author states how that’s what happens in most dystopian novels and he didn’t want that to happen in his.
i thought it was super interesting and yeah it was boring at some points but i just found the main character intriguing AND I LOVE TOMMY OKAY?
