This is desolate and despondent. But it never tricks you into thinking it will be anything else. It tells you from page one that this isn't a happy story and that you'll be left wanting. But the story-tellers we are trick ourselves into believing that everything will get wrapped up in a nice little bow. No. False. This is pure science fiction. I don't know what was going on at any point of this book but by god am I so glad it exists. A women wrote this in the 90s??? Iconic. Never before seen. Stunning.
For such a short book, it packs a massive punch. Almost anything you could have questions about in a dystopian world are brought up in these mere 188 pages.
I can't say I ever felt fulfilled or happy reading this book but it definitely left me reeling and talking about the subject matter with everyone who had the displeasure of being within ear shot of me that week.
Critically this book is a 5 star. But by vibes, it's a 4.

I really appreciated the critical vs. vibes rating. Needed that to help me decipher if I wanted to read. And I will indeed read.
Good review Katie. My book club is reading this for February. This what I appreciate about my book club. How many book clubs do you hear choosing dystopia novels?
What a perfect, succinct review! Totally agree, especially regarding the five star/four star distinction.

Wow I couldn't have put it better myself. Exactly this. This is the review. I was left a human question mark. I am filled with the dread of loneliness even if it's my go-to status of existence lol. My only addition is her not knowing men wasnt the most defining element of her existence but oh well
Beautiful review. I am rereading it, and also one of the people on my friends list commented on someone else's review, someone who disliked it. Well, not every book is for everyone. And as you said, this is definitely not a happy story. But Honestly, I loved it, because it made me think and because it isn't a story that's wrapped up in a neat little package. It's just a different story altogether, and the writing… Just wow.
Fantastic review!! This is exactly how I felt reading the book and I’ve been hopping between 4 & 5 stars because of it.
I just finished reading it. I too rated it a 4 star. Mainly because I so badly wanted her to find some answer or finally reach a civilisation or any sort of any meaning to this whole story. But then I realized that this is exactly how the story was supposed to end and this is exactly how it is supposed to make us readers feel! Crazy!
I’m with you on this, and I know it mentioned that it wasn’t a happy ending and nothing happens, but my, how frustrated I felt throughout reading it. I loved it but hated how it went nowhere, she should’ve gave us something to hang our hopes on —she gave quite a few but they vanished about the same time she delivered them. All and all, great monologues and passages written all over but it didn’t give me closure, I hated that.
YES. THIS. I also gave it 4 stars, but feel like it could be 5? Maybe it is 5? It’s been a solid 24 hours since I finished, and I still feel so uneasy. I think that’s the point though.
