This was such a powerful and prophetic read. I realize that this novel isn't incredibly old but I still found it uncanny how many specific details she included that feel oh so possible in 2024.
Some readers hate when author's have strong opinions in their novels. Personally, I tend to love it. This book explores a multifaceted near post apocalyptic future where there has been a breakdown of the economy and the deterioration of the environment. I'm glad I didn't read this novel in a depressed place because this was an incredibly tough read.
Fantastical or psychic elements can be challenging to write into science fiction in a way that allows me to suspend my disbelief. It was a unique choice but I found it worked in the story.
Finally, I really loved the characters who were complex and flawed. I found myself caring for them deeply and feeling sympathetic to their situations. A lot of this novel was slower paced and I was completely satisfied to just spend time with them.
