So many hauntings. It is a tragic sad story, with love, hunger and need. I loved what the author did with the spirit companions and their relationship with Roos and Agnes., they are such intriguing characters. I just couldn't do anything more than to feel for them all, with anguish as things unfolded and a shapeless little hope for something.

Some choices in the story development weren't for me either (a lot of somehow, I am ninja warrior now, somehow I had to skip all the process of something and here I am, they said). It could work for other folks though....more

It is not something I do, to rate a book that I DNFed, even more startling is the 4% (I know, I know) but there is a reason for dropping the book like a hot potato... a racist hot potato.
How many casual racist slices make a racist pie? Two? Four? How about the plot background and the whole start of the book? Is that enough? Native American people are very serious and protective of their different cultures; the constant misrepresentation, cultural appropriation and a long History lesson, in tomes, of problems make it a very sensitive issue.
I skimmed the book description, missing the red flag in there. I found it in a list promoting queer authors, saw the raving reviews and hopped in, that is on me. But for whatever reason, I found myself reading instead of a fun queer book.... this.

I am not really a pirate fan, so I went expecting... I don't know really, but as I read I was getting very invested with the story and the characters, loved them to pieces. Sometimes you read characters that fall flat or are lacking in some aspect or many, and they end up hindering the story and involvement. And sometimes you read characters that make you want more, as this was the case, I wanted more of their story, background, a bit more polishing too, but you know? They made me feel things, silly buggers.
The worlbuilding is intriguing, I hope to see it more developed in the next book. A great start for the series....more

A lot of time invested in the oh!-what-do-they-mean-why-do-they-whatever-who-knows could be used to carve depth in the characters. It is ok not to have everything being a mystery or something. Just my two cents.
I am very curious about the story, so maybe I will picking up book 3....more

This one is tricky to rate, dont get me wrong, it is very enjoyable, I think the narration is very fluid and entertaining, the author has a very impressive ease with it. I just felt that some things needed more definition, like the characters and story progression and a bit more editing in various scenes. I dont think I am very fond of Jasyn, but I liked Atalanta very much. The book has a lot of promise, and I will pick the next one to see how it goes....more

As with some other Hiyodori's books, it is a slow paced story, a slow burn romance. It has a perfect balance of dark and sweet, Tiller and Carnelian work out so well and you just want soft, kind things for them. The forest is fascinating and a nutritious addition to the universe, worldbuilding remains a very tasty treat.
In short, sure, maybe I would even read with pleasure Hiyodori's grocery list, but come on, this book has everything: lesbians with swords, evil forests, road trips, sexy loose cannonball chicks, questionable food choices, hairy surprises, zombies needing a tan urgently, shinny leotards and very lewd hand holding. ...more

I have read Sturgeon's novels before, they were brilliant, and this was my first short story collection and I found the same brilliance in them too. I had a soft spot for him, his ideas and stories are intriguing and fascinating, curiously I always felt sort of detached, at least emotionally. Nothing wrong with that, books kick differently and that is the beauty of them. But now I feel my fascination very burdened with the sexism and ableism in his stories, with age, my capacity to compartmentalize is lessened.
The collection pours a terrible longing to connect, the attempts to do so, mostly fail and when they succeed, it doesn't come naturally. But at least for me, it is no wonder, you would find just barely scratching the surface, the kind of homoerotic brotherhood of solid men (bruh!) that cant not make sense of women, besides desire, and reflecting their vain attempt, with the shallowness they see in said women. Huge food for thought, although not related to the bravery for his time, of exploring homosexuality and gender in some of the stories.
Another not cool fixation is the one of physical appearance and disabilities that bring pain and suffering to people and make monsters out of them (according to him, of course). It gives the curious effect of a very uneven blending of shallowness and depth. Openness and stale views.
The stories have offensive stuff, a boldness that was beyond his time, witty twists and fascinating ideas. The whole sad human package in a brilliant writer....more
