Read 4 times. Last read March 2, 2018.
To summarize: Mistah. Darcy.
*cue the long, sustained high-pitched squealing *
This was truly as glorious as I remember. Every time I reread this novel, I love it more.
The romance , the high society , the witty banter. Gah. I just adore it all.
Now, back in the day...there was one, singular goal for all women above the age of 16. GET YOURSELF A MAN before you reach 25 and become a SPINSTER *cue high-society ladies fainting*.

Mrs. Bennet (their mother) has taken this so completely to heart that she thinks of nothing else. After all,
Plus Jane Austen is totally my soul sister.
As with most old-timey books, It is far easier for me to listen to them than to read them. I like hearing the odd phrases and ancient unused words much more than struggling through the hard copy. I really enjoyed this audiobook and the narrator did a fab job of characterization.

This was truly as glorious as I remember. Every time I reread this novel, I love it more.
The romance , the high society , the witty banter. Gah. I just adore it all.
Elizabeth Bennet (second eldest of the five Bennet sisters) is the one with a clear, level head. Jane is the beautiful one, Mary is the look-at-me-I'm-so-pious one, Lydia is the I'm-so-dumb-that-I'm-probably-going-to-get-murdered one and Kitty is the well-she's-just-kinda-there one.
"And your defect is to hate everybody."
"And yours," he replied with a smile, "is willfully to misunderstand them."

After all,
Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy moved into town and immediately Mrs. Bennett set her dasterdly plans in motion (on behalf of her mortified children). She will do whatever necessary to get a rich man to put a ring on it (oh Beyonce, your words are applicable in any century).
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."
Only, there is a snag in her otherwise flawless plans. Elizabeth is not going to roll over to whatever man is thrust her way. To her mother's ever-living-disappointment, Elizabeth has all the spunk and backbone of a truly glorious woman:
"A lady's imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment."
Truly a great read, no matter the century.
"I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine."
Plus Jane Austen is totally my soul sister.

"I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! -- When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library."

thank you! I've only just started but I'm already hooked
Joey wrote: "Also- what are your top 5 non-series books you would recommend to a friend who enjoys reading?"Yup. Def the nonzombie one (though i am planning on checking out the zombie version after this one)
Hmm. ... most hooks i read are series. Do you have a genre to narrow things down?

Nope, just looking for recs from a reputable source.

Well, anything that I've rated 5 stars is something I'd recommend in a heartbeat - but here are a few of my other faves (besides Pride and Prejudice, of course):
--Best Illustrated: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
--Best comedic book: Rhett & Link's Book of Mythicality: A Field Guide to Curiosity, Creativity, and Tomfoolery
--Best touching novel: The Art of Racing in the Rain
--Best Quirky History: At Home: A Short History of Private Life
--Best Gaiman: American Gods

You are a doll. Thanks so much! I have a to-read list, but I enjoy being referred to by reputable sources.
Do you think Coraline (animated film) is appropriate for children under five? Gaiman writes some dark stuff.
Joey wrote: "Do you think Coraline (animated film) is appropriate for children under five? Gaiman writes some dark stuff."The book was spooky and the movie was as well. It would probably be scary for a kid....
This is my favourite of all of Jane Austen's books too. I'd also like to highlight to you the sequel written by Frances Murray "Expectations" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1.... (I reviewed it last year). She does get the period feel very well and the characters. Takes the story in a direction that is satisfying for the reader and believable. More focussed on Mr Bennett and those still at home than on Lizzy.

After that, Persuasion is my next favourite. It's a while since I read it, but Sense and Sensibility also works for me - interesting change in the characters through the story. I used to like Northanger Abbey, but most recent re-read I couldn't get into it. Emma - which my English teacher at school praised to the skies as being a new development for Jane Austen and what a shame she'd died before she could write more on that train - I couldn't get into at all.
Incidentally, Persuasion hasn't been filmed as much as Pride and Prejudice, but for my money the one to watch is the BBC version starring Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds - there was a more recent version filmed that jazzed up the ending in a non-period way.

Sounds like i have quite a few books to read and review now :) I'm on an "old books" kick, so your suggestions are very much welcome :)
:) Northanger Abbey is Jane Austen taking the mick out of the contemporary craze for the Gothik novel with the plucky heroine. It's not a comedy any more than P&P is, but I do remember some dry humour to it. The last time I picked it up to read I found that it no longer appealed much. Just thought I'd mention that for fairness to it.
Incidentally, just remembered an article that was around last year about the most probable appearance for Mr Darcy. Quite interesting....https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017...
Carro wrote: "Incidentally, just remembered an article that was around last year about the most probable appearance for Mr Darcy. Quite interesting...."Oh my. That is rather different than I pictured!
: DI did also like the bit about "What's fantastic about Jane Austen's writing is that Mr Darcy is both of the era and timeless."

Omg yes. Definitely
The movie version you got the GIFs from is my favorite version that I have seen so far! Have yet to see the watch the raved about short series with Colin Firth but plan to remedy that sometime in my life.
Absolutely delightful review Miranda. It made my day to read it. This is my all time favourite Jane Austen book. Thank you for sharing this.

For the longest time i was obsessed with watching every conceivable version :) i loved knightly's facial expressions but the bbc version was truer to the book

your review was so fabulous Miranda!! 👌🏽👌🏽 I loved this book when I read it and would like to read more classics, but I find it hard to read them because of the language. I was thinking of audio for classics as well - where did you listen to your one?

These were some of my favorite quotes from Austen as well. I truly believe Darcy was the reason this novel was became one of my favorites. We explored many literary elements in my Intro to Literature class, and Austen seems to be able to tie setting, tone, glorious characters, etc. into a lovely package deal where they all shine. Even though Darcy came off as a rude, arrogant character, Austen wrote him in such a powerful, magnetic manor where it was hard to hate him. She built up so much tension between Elizabeth and Darcy and made their relationship exciting and refreshing. I really enjoyed this novel!

Such a tough question ! Id say what i like the most about the book is that we get to see what Darcy thinks which we dont have in the adaptations, it just adds a whole other layer of depht to the story! My fave part of the book has to be when Lizzy goes to Pemberley after reading Darcy's letter and the both of them get to really discover each other without prejudices, its so cute and gives me all the feels !!
Astrid wrote: "Whats your favorite part of the book ?"Hmm...i loved the grand reveal too! But who doesn't love lizzie 's first rejection of Mr. Darcy?
