Engaging illustrations accompany informative text in this unique Christmas book. Author, Andy McGuire, is also the talented artist on this project that combines details of history and archeology alongside the biblical story. Readers will learn things like: Did Mary really ride a donkey to Bethlehem? Did carpenters work with wood or stone? What did the manger Jesus was born in really look like? How old was Jesus when the wisemen brought him gifts? What amazing things did the Egyptians create thousands of years ago that we still use today? There’s much more for readers to discover and discuss.
In addition to the above, McGuire includes a nice collection of animal facts that support his wonderful artwork. It looks like he used colored pencil, chalk or a combination of the two. His pictures are soft, life like, pastoral, detailed. I wanted to reach out and pet them because I could make a connection; amazing facial expressions. There are three pages featuring a camel that are a character study; spectacular.
THE WONDERS OF THE FIRST CHRISTMAS will make an excellent gift and addition to family or church libraries. Young children will be captivated by the illustrations while older kids and adults will additionally enjoy learning about and discussing the historical information not usually found in books for this audience. Highly recommended📚
Read and Reviewed from a NetGalley eARC, with thanks.
This was a beautifully illustrated, simple but profound children’s book. It told of the birth of Christ in easy to understand concepts that highlighted certain aspects of Christ’s and His early years that were well researched. Such as what a manger was and what made up a stable during the time of Christ. This would be a wonderful gift for a child at Christmas. *A compliment copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are mine alone.*
This is an excellent addition to the many books about the Christmas Nativity. A story well known and much loved by children from their earliest participation in plays at nursery and school. Parents well accustomed to making costumes for their kids as shepherds and magi. Of course pressure is placed on the accepted tale and the need to include all the class; not everyone can be Mary or Joseph. We had Carol singers one year and a full menagerie of animals another time.
Happily here is a book that is well researched and attempts to put the wonder and magic back into the story of the birth of Jesus. In additional it is presented as an educational account to bring interesting facts and archeological understanding to these historical events.
In the process there is an encounter with the familiar with the additional depth of biblical prophecy and explanation of the principle elements of the account. Bringing clarity to the use of a “stable/inn” and “manger” and informative expansion of the supporting cast. Explaining Angels, Sheep and Donkeys and placing the story in a physical and historical setting.
I particularly liked the details around “carpentry” suggesting the records reveal the work was with stone in building, rather than wood and assembly of ‘flat-packs’.
This kind of in depth educational presentation will be gobbled up by your own children who like nothing better than learning new facts and bringing fresh detail to this wonderful and inspirational story of God’s love and plans at work.
The Wonders of the First Christmas is a children’s book that shares the Nativity story in a unique way. In addition to the story are historical facts that might help adults answer questions young readers might have.
Although I appreciate the fact bubbles throughout, they might be a bit distracting to some younger readers, but even so, they still add useful information for young Bible explorers. The story covers Gabriel visiting Mary to when Jesus, Joseph and Mary escape Herod’s evil plan.
One element that really blows me away are the illustrations and the attention on animals, which makes it great for animal lovers. The pictures are unique and beautiful, allowing readers to visualize each scene. Overall, this educational and inspirational book is full of inspiration, historical references, and beautiful illustrations that tell the Good News! It’s the perfect Advent and Christmas book for families and children’s ministries.

#CoverLoverBookReview received a review copy of this book. Opinions are 100% my own.
As an adult, this Christmas story didn’t add much that I didn’t already know; however, I appreciated the fun animal facts sprinkled in. I always loved how animals are featured in the story, and our own family nativity has more animals than people peering down at baby Jesus. The illustrations in this book were absolutely lovely and done up in calming and peaceful colors. This would be a wonderful addition to a child’s personal library.
Thank you to Zonderkidz and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
Small children live in the moment. Their ability to comprehend or independently visualize history or how people lived differently from their own way of living has to be gently and gradually taught. They "see" dinosaurs as frightful animals that should growl, prowl, and devour. But in actuality they see a simply an animal not much different from animals in their own time-line than that of the neighbor's dog that barks, growls, runs, and jumps. They are "in the now" mentally and physically.
Therefore, instilling a comprehension of the Christ Child being born in a barn, placed in a manger, and being pursued by an evil king or other archeological, governmental, and societal life different from that in which he, himself, actual lives, is nil. So a book such as The Wonders of the First Christmas: Explore the Birth of Jesus through History, Archaeology and Art that tells the Bibilical account of the birth of Jesus in storybook form is typical. The inclusion of history lesson tidbits running parallel on the book's pages provides opportunity for parents to introduce elements of history and life during those ancient times to the young child. A wonderful concept and a helpful tool for parents to have at hand.
Beautifully told, the story of the birth of the Son of God adheres well to Scripture account. The illustrations are large, beautifully colored, and clearly drawn to visually articulate each scene. Detail and softness are both achieved in the art. The struggle of Joseph and the donkey on the journey are easy to comprehend. A snippet of Roman history. A snippet of the usefulness of donkeys during that period of history. Snippets about the life of the shepherds in the fields and the type of sheep they tended. The illustrations really capture the birth of Christ, the surroundings, the way of life, and His early journey to the safety of Egypt.
I highly recommend this unusual "Christmas story" book for its beauty, unusual information about the times, and its accurate retelling of the birth of the Christ Child.

As a lifelong Christian but one who has not read The Bible completely, I like to read biblical stories that are set at a child’s level. This helps me to ensure understanding of difficult concepts even though I am an avid reader who reads at a collegiate level. But, when it comes to The Bible, I just feel better absorbing the stories at a child’s level. So, I was more than happy to review this new children’s book that explores the story of The Nativity from new and different aspects.
What first enticed me to the book was the illustrations and I really enjoyed the artwork with its muted soft tones throughout the story. But I also enjoyed all of the new information regarding what was considered a manger during this time period and that all the “inns” were actually second-floor guest rooms that were full. And that Jesus was more likely born on the first floor of one of these buildings because that is where the animals were housed. I enjoyed learning about the shepherds and the wise men and how angels are truly represented in The Bible.
I liked that this story takes you beyond just the night of Christ’s birth into His early years and the reason for His family’s flight into Egypt. And the information regarding all of the different animals is insightful and relevant teaching to the age group for which this book is intended.
My only issue with this being a children’s book was the word “kill” as regards Herod wanting to assassinate Jesus as a baby. I thought maybe “harm” would be a better word. But my husband, who has read The Bible in its entirety, believes this is perfectly normal biblical language and not too harsh for today’s children.
So, as a parent or grandparent who might be reading this book to a young child, just know that Herod’s feelings toward Jesus are explored. Otherwise, I found this book to be a lovely and well-researched inclusion into the story of Jesus’ conception and birth.

The Wonders of the First Christmas: Explore the Birth of Jesus through History, Archaeology, and Art
Author Andy McGuire has created a beautiful book for children of all ages with a unique look at the true reason for Christmas. This picture book begins with the angel appearing to Mary telling her she will have a son and name him Jesus, ending with Joseph, Mary and Jesus arriving safely home so He can fulfill his Fathers will on earth.
The story is told in a simple, easy to understand manner accompanied by stunning illustrations featuring beauty, peace and hope. Throughout the book are inserted text boxes containing factual information concerning the way life in the day and time of Jesus. For example, Mary is pictured riding a donkey to Bethlehem. The information box explains that while scriptures don’t state Mary rode on a donkey, still, that would have been the most likely method of travel because donkeys have greater endurance and can better handle the dry climate of the Middle East. The illustration of a close up of the swaddled baby Jesus sleeping is wonderfully touching with the curious stable animals looking on nearby. Since trees and wood were scarce in that geographic area, mangers were hewn from rock, so baby Jesus was most likely sleeping in a rock bowl with animals nibbling around him.
The message is clear that God wanted to be with us because he loves us so much and sending his son to earth as a tiny baby was all part of his divine plan.
Reviews say the book is written ages 4 and up. I think it can be adapted for all ages due to the well researched facts and the distinct message the text conveys.
I suggest readers read the story then go back and read again adding in the informational text boxes.
The Wonders of the First Christmas: Explore the Birth of Jesus through History, Archaeology, and Art Andy McGurie Author Andy McGuire offers children a look at the true reason for Christmas. The birth of Christ is told from the beginning when the angel appears to Mary. The story is told in a simple easy to understand manner. On several pages there is a box with more information. This is a precious story for Christians. (I’ve never been able to understand why unbelievers celebrate Christmas, a celebration of the birth of Christ.) The story moves along at a nice pace from the angel’s visit to Mary to the angel coming to Joseph in a dream. While we see Mary riding a donkey to Bethlehem in the illustration, the information box reminds us that nowhere in the scriptures does it say Mary was on a donkey. But that would have been the most likely method of travel. The young couple stayed in a stable because there were no rooms left at the end. The story continues with the shepherds and the Wisemen. Again, the box reminds us tht scripture says nothing about the Wisemen/Kings riding camels although it would have been an appropriate method of travel. The Illustrations are beautifully done; they are subdued, which is very appropriate for they compliment the story without overpowering in for the focus should be on the text in this tale. This book can introduce scripture and can be used to assist parents by opening dialogue that will allow parents to openly discuss the story with their children.

This is a must-have book for anyone with children in their life! Beautiful illustrations, a story that faithfully shares the birth of Christ that's told in scripture, and fascinating information about the culture of that time are packed into this gorgeous hardback book! Author Andy McGuire uses text that's easy for children to understand, but the facts revealed are equally captivating to me!
If you long for your children and grandchildren to know the 'reason for the season', grab this book! If you want them to learn more about Creation, the world as it was during biblical times, and the history surrounding this special birth, make this one of their Christmas gifts! Children ages 4-8 are the target group for this Nativity story, but it's perfect for all ages. I will proudly share The Wonders of the First Christmas with my granddaughter and the children in my church because I want to help them uncover the amazing, real story of Christmas!
I received a review copy through FrontGate Media. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
This is a Christian book about Christmas for ages 4 and up. The illustrations were in a very realistic style and showed historically accurate visuals for the story. The main text recounts the birth of Jesus as described in the Bible, from Mary being visited by an angel until Jesus' family returns from Egypt after Herod's death. There were also boxes with a paragraph or two of historical information that expanded upon the main text, and this would be of more interest to maybe 7 year-olds and up. These boxes provided more information on carpenters, Rome, donkeys, inns, swaddling clothes, shepherds, sheep, angels, mangers, wise men, prophecy about Jesus' birth, myrrh and frankincense, camels, and Egypt. Overall, I think this would be of most interest to kids who have grown up hearing the basic Christmas story but are old enough to like learning more background information. I'd recommend this well-written and illustrated book.

The Wonders of the First Christmas is a children’s storybook that brings the Nativity to life using beautiful Biblically and historically accurate illustrations, explanations of the Biblical text, and historical tidbits. My boys (6 years old and 10 years old) and I enjoyed reading through this book. We found ourselves taking our time, looking at the pictures, reading through the historical facts, and comparing how the real story from Luke compares to what we see on Christmas cards, movies, etc. This story was great at making us pause and ask questions about the importance of Jesus’ birth. We had several great conversations while reading it!
This picture book would be a great addition to your Advent reading list. I highly recommend adding The Wonders of the First Christmas to your bookshelf this Christmas season. And it would make a great gift for Advent or for Christmas!
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions are my own.
The Wonders of the First Christmas by Andy McGuire
The Wonders of the First Christmas was a delightful Christmas story. I especially liked the emphasis on all the actions being part of "God's plan". The illustrations were eye-catching and very life-like. They added to the warmth to the story. The text was well researched, and flowed nicely. It hit all of the important points, and it is Bible based.
The side-bar information, which was located on almost every page, was extremely informative and makes for great conversations. The book can be read without them, however, so that the storyline isn't interrupted and it flows better. The reader has the option of reading the story with or without the side-bars.
I'm sure this book will become a yearly tradition in my household. I can imagine reading it to my grandchildren amongst mugs of hot chocolate and sweet Christmas cookies . . .
3.5 🌟 The Wonders of the First Christmas is a visually rich, thoughtfully written stroll through the world of Jesus’ birth. With gentle narration and gorgeous illustrations, it invites readers—young and curious at heart—to not just hear the story but imagine living in it. The added historical tidbits feel like answers to the sharp, curious questions a child might ask. These details slow the pace, but also deepen the experience—offering room for reflection, conversation, and appreciation.
That said, the subtitle overpromises. Despite hints at archaeology and art, those elements barely surface. Readers expecting a layered historical or artistic deep-dive may feel slightly misled. And the ending, while visually serene, feels more like a soft stop than a satisfying close. Still, for what it is—a warm, informative retelling for thoughtful readers—it delivers.
The Wonders of the First Christmas By Andy McGuire
This is a beautiful book. It centers around the biblical telling of the birth of Jesus Christ. But it also includes interpretations of exactly what some of the biblical passages mean, for example that stables were not what we think of as stables today, or that Joseph and Jesus were probably not carpenters as we think of them but more like contractors or stone masons. And all of this is written on a level that children can understand.
There is another facet of this book which is equally compelling – the wonderful illustrations. The visual experience is gorgeous. And adds so much to the storytelling.
I would highly recommend this book to all those with young children or grandchildren to explain the Christmas story. Be sure to sit down and read it with them!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC.
Andy McGuire has written a book which not only beautifully details the Luke 1-2 passages of the Bible (where you'll find the Christmas story), he's painted illustrations which capture the imagination and help us picture what life looked like then. We meet Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus; the shepherds and wise men; and hear about the wicked King Herod of Israel and the Roman government which ruled Israel and the geographical area of the Mediterranean Sea (and areas beyond!). McGuire also included vignettes which tell the reader more about the culture, history, geography, and daily life of those who lived in Israel.
This is a book that I've read again and again, and never tired of. Perfect for children and adults, particularly for Advent and Christmastime.
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions and thoughts shared here are my own honest ones.
Is that Christmas story getting so familiar that you don't even think about the details?
This new beautifully illustrated picture book takes the time to add in little pop-ups that dig a little deeper.
Here are some examples:
🌟What kind of carpenter was Joseph, Mary's betrothed?
🌟How big was the Roman empire?
🌟 Did Mary really ride a donky on the trip to Bethlehem?
🌟 What was the stable that Joseph and Mary stayed in really like?
🌟 Why was the shepherd's job so important?
These questions and more are answered in this stunning new Christmas book. It will be available on October 7 giving folks plenty of time to pick up some copies for gifts.
Thank you to Zonderkidz and NetGalley for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the way this book has a dual appeal. There is a storyline for younger readers and below, a storyline for older readers. As your reader grows, they can start to read one part to themselves as you read the other to them as they get older. The book also gives opportunities for older siblings or cousins to read aloud and show the beautiful pictures to their younglings.
I see this book as a fine investment for families and even schools. It's a wonderful way to teach the story of the Birth of Jesus.
Thank you to the author, Andy McGuire, NetGalley and ZonderKidz for this gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Wonders of the First Christmas is a beautifully illustrated children’s book by Andy McGuire. It’s a wonderful picture book explaining the Nativity to readers of all ages. The basic story and simple pictures are perfect for young children. However each set of pages includes interesting and relevant historical facts which will appeal to older children and adults. I was amazed by how much I learned while reading this short book. Reading The Wonders of the First Christmas should become a part of all Christian families’ holiday traditions.
I received an advance review copy (ARC) from NetGalley and Zonderkidz for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Really sweet & inspiring children's book for a Christian-based Christmas. This picture book goes through the biblical story of Mary & Joseph, baby Jesus, the shepherds, and the wise men. I loved how this one included historical elements & research throughout each stage of the story, written in a way that children can understand.
My only complaint is that visually, the words are small on the page compared to the huge illustrated pictures. But overall, this is a great book for any Christian family with young children to read during the holidays!
I thought this was a wonderful book! The artwork is beautiful and was wonderfully rendered. The artwork makes this story even more special. This is a lovely book and a great addition to the telling of the nativity. It's written in a way that children can understand it and in a more modern way of telling the story.I appreciated the side notes explaining certain aspects of the passages on the page. This helps clarify things, as our modern view can be very different from that time period. I definitely recommend it!
ARC received from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Wonders of the First Christmas by Andy McGuire is a children’s book coming out in October this year. I was struck by the historical accuracy and the definitions of customs of the times. Between the explanation of Roman rulers and gifts from the wise men and even how much a camel can drink, I found this book quite refreshing and interesting, as I’m sure so many children will as well. I highly recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. The opinions expressed are completely my own.
This is the sweetest book. I absolutely love the illustrations, they are beautiful. And I love the facts on each page and I learned things I previously wasn’t aware of, like the fact animals were kept in the lower level of the home so their heat rose to the humans room above. Altogether it is a beautiful book with a Biblically accurate story of the birth of Jesus with a lot of additional history and anthropology added in. I loved it and will recommend it!
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for sending me an ARC of this book.
The Wonders of the First Christmas by Andy McGuire is a children's book that talks about the birth of Christ and also give some historical information about what some of the references actually meant. It explains a little about the Wise Men, shepherds, and even the manger. This book is a "picture book" that is great for young children, but it also is nice reading for adults and children of all ages. Thank you NetGalley.com.
This book is gorgeously illustrated. I enjoyed the insets that were throughout the book that told more about the history and time period. The insets are what set this book apart from other books about the story of Christmas. I recommend this book to be added to a home or church library.
I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
The Wonders of the First Christmas by Andy McGuire takes readers through the first Christmas and the Birth of Jesus Christ offering additional facts about the time period and the language used in the bible along the way.
I found the book to be a bit dry and lacking a good flow as a read aloud for younger kids, but would be a good book for older readers (7-12yrs).
Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free ebook ARC. My review is not required to be positive, and all opinions are my own.
This an exquisite book with a delightful retelling of the Nativity story, accompanied with beautiful pictures. For the younger children, the story is straight-forward and endearing. For older children, the accompanying explanations add another dimension to the familiar tale. This would be a wonderful addition to any library.
“The Wonders of the First Christmas” (Explore the Birth of Jesus through History, Archaeology, and Art) by Andy McGuire A Very Good 1st Christmas Book The story is well done as is the art work. The ‘Fact Blocks’ are, for me, what sets this book apart from the others. I would enjoy reading this book with little ones and hear their questions and exclamations, too! Happy Reading ! !
This beautifully illustrated children's book gives a narrative of the Christmas story with additional cultural and scientific information. You could read just the Christmas story to a younger child and read part or all of the additional information to an older child. It would make a wonderful gift and keepsake.
The Wonders of the First Christmas is a wonderful telling of the birth of Jesus with added historical information. The historical information adds another level of depth to put the story of Jesus' birth into a historical context for readers to understand the story better. The illustrations are beautiful and brings this story to life.
